Mastering MUO in Small Animals: Practical Strategies Every Vet Should Know
Meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO) represents a group of idiopathic, immune-mediated inflammatory diseases affecting the central nervous system of small animals, particularly dogs. It encompasses conditions such as necrotising and granulomatous meningoencephalitis, characterised by neurological deficits including seizures, ataxia, and behavioural changes. Early recognition through advanced imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis is critical for accurate diagnosis and prognosis. Management focuses on rapid immunosuppressive therapy, typically involving corticosteroids and adjunctive agents like cytosine arabinoside or cyclosporine. Long-term monitoring and client communication are essential for relapse prevention and quality-of-life optimisation. A structured, evidence-based approach enhances diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes in affected patients.
