Strategies to Prevent CRD Infection
Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) in poultry is a globally significant respiratory infection caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), a highly resilient pathogen capable of long-term environmental survival. It spreads through both vertical and horizontal transmission and leads to respiratory distress, reduced productivity, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. CRD impairs immunity—partly through cortisol-mediated suppression—and affects commercial and indigenous breeds alike, causing major economic losses. Disease progression ranges from mild respiratory involvement to chronic infection and air sacculitis. Effective control requires an integrated approach combining targeted antibiotics, phytochemical support, strict biosecurity, environmental management, and optimized farm practices to prevent outbreaks and reduce the severity of Complex Chronic Respiratory Disease (CCRD).
Review current best practices and management protocols for CRD control in poultry flocks.
